42.4mm x 2.5mm Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel Tube
The 42.4mm x 2.5mm Hot-Dip Galvanised Steel Tube is a circular mild steel tube supplied with an industrial hot-dip-galvanised coating for improved corrosion resistance. It is suitable for fabrication, frames, supports, barriers, agricultural projects and general internal or external steelwork, subject to the requirements of the individual project.
This range starts as mild steel tube and is normally cut to the ordered length before being sent for hot-dip galvanising. It is different from KI Metals’ ready-galvanised EN 10255 Handrail Tube range.

Steel Grade Information
The underlying mild steel tube grade varies according to the diameter, wall thickness, manufacturer and current stock availability.
Where the product is supplied as a structural circular hollow section to BS EN 10219, it is commonly supplied in S235JRH structural hollow section grade. Selected sizes or batches may be supplied in S355J2H structural hollow section grade where applicable.
This wording does not guarantee that every tube size is manufactured to BS EN 10219 or that a particular grade will be supplied for an individual order.

Hot-Dip Galvanising Process and Cut-End Protection
This steel tube is normally cut to the required length before being sent for hot-dip galvanising.
Each pre-cut length will usually include an approximately 8 mm process hole where required so that the material can be safely handled and suspended and can vent and drain during the galvanising process. The location of the hole may vary according to the tube size, length and galvanising requirements. This is a normal production feature and is not a product defect.
In some cases, material may be galvanised in full lengths and cut afterwards. Where this method is used, exposed cut ends are protected with a suitable zinc-rich cold-galvanising spray.

Surface Condition
Hot-dip galvanising is an industrial protective process rather than a decorative finish. The surface may include variations in colour, brightness and texture, together with zinc spangle, drainage marks, minor runs, handling marks, local roughness and variations around edges and process holes.
These cosmetic variations are normal characteristics of hot-dip-galvanised steel and do not necessarily indicate a fault with the product or coating.
Corrosion Protection
The hot-dip-galvanised zinc coating provides improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared with untreated mild steel. Service life depends on the environment, exposure conditions, installation and maintenance.
Cutting, drilling, grinding or welding after delivery can expose the underlying steel. Affected areas should be protected with a suitable zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion resistance is required.

Design and Suitability
Tube selection must not be based on dimensions alone. The required material grade, wall thickness, load capacity, connections, supports and installation method should be specified or approved by a suitably qualified person where the application is structural or safety critical.
KI Metals supplies the material to the dimensions ordered but does not determine whether a particular tube is suitable for the intended load or application. This product is not sold as certified pressure pipe or scaffold tube.

Welding and Fabrication
Galvanised steel tube can be cut, drilled, welded and fabricated, but suitable preparation and safety precautions must be followed.
The zinc coating should be removed from the immediate weld area before welding. After fabrication, affected areas should be cleaned and treated with an appropriate zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion protection is required.
Heating or welding galvanised steel can produce hazardous zinc-oxide fumes. Suitable ventilation, local extraction, respiratory protection and appropriate personal protective equipment must be used.
