Structural Steel Grade Information
This Galvanised Mild Steel T Bar is normally supplied in S275JR non-alloy structural steel grade to BS EN 10025-2.
Other grades, including S355JR non-alloy structural steel grade to BS EN 10025-2, may be supplied where applicable according to the section size, manufacturer and current stock availability. The published grade information does not guarantee that a particular grade will be supplied for an individual order.
If your project requires S275JR, S355JR, another material grade, certification or traceability, please contact KI Metals before placing your order and obtain written confirmation from KI Metals.
Telephone conversations, verbal discussions, customer order notes, notes included with drawings and other instructions submitted with an order do not constitute confirmation of the material grade.
A particular grade, certification or traceability is only confirmed where KI Metals has provided written confirmation before the order is placed.
Hot-Dip Galvanising Process and Cut-End Protection
Galvanised Mild Steel T Bar is normally cut to the required length before being sent for hot-dip galvanising.
Each pre-cut length will usually include an approximately 8 mm process hole where required so the material can be safely handled and suspended during galvanising. The position of the hole may vary according to the section size, length and galvanising requirements. This is a normal production feature and is not a product defect.
In some cases, material may be galvanised in full lengths and cut afterwards. Where this method is used, exposed cut ends are protected with a suitable zinc-rich cold-galvanising spray.
If zinc-rich cold-galvanising spray is not permitted for your project, or you require the cut ends to be hot-dip galvanised, please contact KI Metals before placing your order. We can review the cutting and galvanising requirements and confirm the most suitable production method.
Surface Condition
Hot-dip galvanising is an industrial protective process rather than a decorative finish. The surface may include variations in colour, brightness and texture, together with zinc spangle, drainage marks, minor runs, handling marks, local roughness and variations around edges and process holes.
These cosmetic variations are normal characteristics of hot-dip-galvanised steel and do not necessarily indicate a fault with the product or coating.
Corrosion Protection
The galvanised zinc coating provides improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared with untreated mild steel. Its service life depends on the environment, exposure conditions, installation and maintenance.
Cutting, drilling, grinding or welding after delivery may expose the underlying steel. Affected areas should be protected with a suitable zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion resistance is required.
Typical Applications
- Fabricated frames and support structures
- Brackets, stiffeners and connection details
- Edging, trims and reinforcement pieces
- Industrial and agricultural fabrication
- External steelwork and general engineering projects
Structural Design and Suitability
Section selection must not be based on dimensions alone. The required section, material grade, load capacity, span, connections and installation method should be specified or approved by a suitably qualified structural engineer where the product forms part of a structural or safety-critical application.
KI Metals supplies the material to the dimensions ordered but does not determine whether a particular T Bar is suitable for the intended load or application.
Cut to Your Required Length
Enter the required measurement in the Length box before adding the product to your basket. KI Metals will cut the T Bar to the specified length with a standard cutting tolerance of ±3 mm.
Products are supplied as-cut and are not deburred. Please contact KI Metals before ordering if your project requires a tighter tolerance, specific end preparation or additional processing.
Welding and Fabrication
Galvanised Mild Steel T Bar can be cut, drilled, welded and fabricated, but suitable preparation and safety precautions must be followed.
The zinc coating should be removed from the immediate weld area before welding. After fabrication, affected areas should be cleaned and treated with an appropriate zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion protection is required.
Heating or welding galvanised steel can produce hazardous zinc-oxide fumes. Suitable ventilation, local extraction, respiratory protection and appropriate personal protective equipment must be used.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the T Bar measurements mean?
The first measurement is the overall flange width, the second is the overall section height and the third is the nominal material thickness. This product is 50mm x 50mm x 6mm.
Why might there be an approximately 8 mm hole?
An approximately 8 mm process hole may be required so the T Bar can be safely handled and suspended during hot-dip galvanising. This is a normal production feature and is not a product defect.
Is a particular steel grade guaranteed?
No. This T Bar is normally supplied in S275JR to BS EN 10025-2. Other grades, including S355JR, may be supplied where applicable. A particular grade is only guaranteed when KI Metals provides written confirmation before the order is placed.
Can I request a particular grade in the order notes?
You may provide information in the order notes, but an order note does not constitute confirmation that a particular grade, certification or traceability will be supplied. Contact KI Metals before ordering and obtain written confirmation.
Are the cut ends always hot-dip galvanised?
Normally the T Bar is cut before galvanising. Some material may instead be galvanised in full lengths and cut afterwards, with exposed ends protected using zinc-rich cold-galvanising spray. Contact KI Metals before ordering if this repair method is not acceptable.
Can it be used outdoors?
The galvanised coating provides improved protection for external applications. Expected service life depends on the environment, exposure conditions, installation and maintenance.
Can it be cut to my required length?
Yes. Enter the required length before adding the product to your basket. The standard cutting tolerance is ±3 mm.
Will every T Bar have the same galvanised appearance?
No. Variations in colour, brightness, zinc pattern and surface texture are normal characteristics of hot-dip-galvanised steel.
Safety Note
Cut ends and edges may be sharp. Wear suitable gloves, eye protection, safety footwear and other appropriate personal protective equipment during handling and fabrication. Secure the T Bar correctly during storage, lifting, transport and installation.
