Bright Steel Product Information
3mm Bright Mild Steel Round Bar EN1A is supplied as solid bright steel bar. Bright steel describes the surface and dimensional condition produced by processes such as cold drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. It does not mean that the material has a decorative or corrosion-protective coating.
Material Grade Information
This product is normally supplied as 230M07, traditionally known as EN1A non-leaded free-cutting steel. The applicable reference is Bright-steel delivery condition to BS EN 10277.
The grade information shown is general supply information and does not guarantee that the stated grade or another particular grade will be supplied for an individual order.
If your project requires a particular grade, leaded or non-leaded condition, certification or traceability, please contact KI Metals before placing your order and obtain written confirmation from KI Metals.
Telephone conversations, verbal discussions, customer order notes, notes included with drawings and other instructions submitted with an order do not constitute confirmation of the material grade.
A particular grade, certification or traceability is only confirmed where KI Metals has provided written confirmation before the order is placed.
Surface Condition
Bright-drawn surface. Bright steel can still show normal drawing lines, light handling marks, storage marks, local discolouration and minor surface oxidation.
Surface appearance can vary between sizes, production batches and suppliers. Bright does not mean polished, decorative, plating-quality or free from every cosmetic mark.
Corrosion Protection
Bright carbon steel is normally supplied without a protective coating and can rust when exposed to moisture, condensation or corrosive environments.
Oil, primer, paint, powder coating, plating or another suitable protection system should be considered for the intended environment. Preparation requirements depend on the selected coating and the final application.
Typical Applications
- Turned parts
- Small shafts
- Fasteners
- Machined components
- Maintenance and repair work
- General workshop and production engineering
Machining
Free-cutting bright steel is commonly selected for turned and machined components. Tooling, speeds, feeds and machining allowance must be chosen for the actual grade and finished-part requirement.
Customers should allow for the ordered cutting tolerance, chucking allowance, facing, finishing and any other machining stock required to achieve the final component dimensions.
Welding and Fabrication
Free-cutting grades should not automatically be treated as general welding grades. If welding is required, the actual grade and an appropriate welding procedure must be confirmed before work begins.
Drilling, grinding, welding or heating can change the surface condition and may create sharp edges, swarf, dust or fumes. Use suitable equipment, ventilation and personal protective equipment for the operation.
Cut to Your Required Length
Enter your required measurement in the Length box before adding the product to your basket. KI Metals will cut the material to the specified length with a standard cutting tolerance of ±3 mm. The ordered quantity refers to the number of individual cut lengths required.
Products are supplied as-cut and are not deburred. Please contact KI Metals before ordering if your project requires a tighter tolerance, machining allowance, specific end preparation or additional processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does bright steel mean?
It describes the improved surface and dimensional condition produced by drawing, peeling, turning or grinding; it is not a corrosion-protective coating.
Is a particular steel grade guaranteed?
No. This product is normally described as 230M07, traditionally known as EN1A non-leaded free-cutting steel, but a particular grade is only guaranteed when KI Metals provides written confirmation before the order is placed. Telephone conversations, verbal discussions, order notes and notes supplied with drawings are not confirmation of material-grade requirements.
Can bright steel rust?
Yes. Bright carbon steel is normally uncoated and should receive suitable protection where corrosion is a concern.
Can it be cut to my required length?
Yes. Enter the required length before adding the product to your basket. The standard cutting tolerance is ±3 mm, and products are supplied as-cut and not deburred.
Is it suitable for machining?
Bright steel is commonly used for machined components, but machinability depends on the actual grade and condition. Tooling, allowances and finished-part requirements remain the customer’s responsibility.
Will every bar have the same bright appearance?
No. Drawing lines, handling marks, storage marks, light oxidation and differences between production batches can occur. Bright steel is not automatically a polished or decorative-finish product.
Can the material be welded?
Free-cutting grades should not automatically be treated as general welding grades. If welding is required, the actual grade and an appropriate welding procedure must be confirmed before work begins.
Safety Notice
This is a solid steel product and may be heavy. Cut ends and machining swarf can be sharp. Use suitable lifting, handling, eye protection, gloves and other personal protective equipment for the operation. Grinding, welding or thermal cutting requires appropriate ventilation and process-specific safety controls.
