  • Need it urgent?

Most of the Galvanised items are ready in stock. However, few items might need Galvanising done, which usually takes 3-5 working days. If you need your order urgently, please contact us on 01213283380, we will confirm if we can deliver this in express service.

Please take note that all galvanized items require drilling prior to the galvanizing process. As a result, you may notice one or two holes at each end, and occasionally three holes for longer lengths to facilitate suspension during the hot dipping process. If you have any inquiries regarding the drilling process, please feel free to contact us at 0121 328 3380 before proceeding with your order.

Universal Beam (UB/RSJ)

This product is a Universal Beam (UB), commonly referred to in the UK as an RSJ, steel beam or I-beam. Universal Beams are parallel-flange structural sections used for horizontal load-bearing spans and supporting frameworks.

Structural Steel Grade Information

This beam is normally supplied as S355JR structural steel to BS EN 10025-2.

The grade information shown is general supply information and does not guarantee that S355JR or another particular grade will be supplied for an individual order.

If your project requires S355JR, another particular material grade, certification or traceability, please contact KI Metals before placing your order and obtain written confirmation from KI Metals.

Telephone conversations, verbal discussions, customer order notes, notes included with drawings and other instructions submitted with an order do not constitute confirmation of the material grade.

A particular grade, certification or traceability is only confirmed where KI Metals has provided written confirmation before the order is placed.

Galvanising Process and Cut-End Protection

Galvanised Steel Beams are normally cut to the required length before being sent for hot-dip galvanising.

Each pre-cut beam will usually include an approximately 8 mm process hole where required so that the material can be safely handled and suspended during the galvanising process. The position of the hole may vary according to the beam size, length and galvanising requirements. This is a normal production feature and is not a product defect.

In some cases, material may be galvanised in full lengths and cut afterwards. Where this method is used, the exposed cut ends are protected with a suitable zinc-rich cold galvanising spray.

If zinc-rich cold galvanising spray is not permitted for your project, or you require the cut ends to be hot-dip galvanised, please contact KI Metals before placing your order. We can review your cutting and galvanising requirements and confirm the most suitable production method.

Surface Condition

Hot-dip galvanising is an industrial protective process rather than a decorative finish. The surface may include variations in colour, brightness and texture, together with zinc spangle, drainage marks, minor runs, handling marks, areas of surface roughness or variations around edges and process holes.

These cosmetic variations are normal characteristics of hot-dip-galvanised steel and do not necessarily indicate a fault with the product or coating.

Corrosion Protection

The hot-dip-galvanised zinc coating provides improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared with untreated structural steel. The service life of the coating depends on the environment, exposure conditions, installation and maintenance.

Cutting, drilling, grinding or welding after delivery may expose the underlying steel. Affected areas should be protected with a suitable zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion resistance is required.

Typical Applications

  • Structural openings and load-bearing supports
  • Building frames and renovation projects
  • Lintels, goalposts and support structures
  • External steelwork
  • Industrial fabrication and civil engineering
  • Agricultural and commercial structures
  • Platforms and supporting frameworks

Structural Design and Suitability

Beam selection must not be based on dimensions alone. The required section, material grade, loading capacity, span, bearing details, connections and installation method should be specified or approved by a suitably qualified structural engineer.

KI Metals supplies the material to the dimensions ordered but does not determine whether a particular beam is suitable for the intended load or application.

Cut to Your Required Length

Enter your required measurement in the Length box before adding the product to your basket. We will cut the beam to your specified length with a standard cutting tolerance of ±3 mm. The ordered quantity refers to the number of individual cut lengths required.

Products are supplied as-cut and are not deburred. Please contact KI Metals before ordering if your project requires a tighter tolerance, specific end preparation or additional processing.

  • Galvanised I-section

Welding and Fabrication

Galvanised steel can be welded, drilled and fabricated, but suitable preparation and safety precautions must be followed.

Heating or welding galvanised steel can produce hazardous zinc oxide fumes. Suitable ventilation, local fume extraction, respiratory protection and appropriate personal protective equipment must be used.

The zinc coating should be removed from the immediate weld area before welding. After fabrication, affected areas should be cleaned and treated with an appropriate zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion protection is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the beam measurements mean?

The first two measurements identify the nominal depth and width of the beam. For this product, the nominal section size is 305mm x 165mm. The 46kg figure represents the nominal mass per metre.

Why is there an 8 mm hole in the beam?

An approximately 8 mm process hole may be required so that the beam can be safely handled and suspended during hot-dip galvanising. This is a normal production feature and is not a product defect.

For some cutting requirements, material may instead be galvanised in full lengths and cut afterwards. Exposed cut ends are then protected with zinc-rich cold galvanising spray. If this repair method is not acceptable, please contact KI Metals before ordering.

Is a particular steel grade guaranteed?

No. This beam is normally supplied as S355JR to BS EN 10025-2, but a particular grade is only guaranteed when KI Metals provides written confirmation before the order is placed. Telephone conversations, verbal discussions, order notes and notes supplied with drawings are not confirmation of material-grade requirements.

Can this beam be used outdoors?

The hot-dip-galvanised coating provides improved protection for external applications. Expected service life depends on the environment, exposure conditions, installation and maintenance.

Can it be cut to my required length?

Yes. Enter your required length before adding the product to your basket. The standard cutting tolerance is ±3 mm.

Will every beam have the same galvanised appearance?

Not necessarily. Variations in colour, brightness, zinc spangle and surface texture are normal characteristics of hot-dip-galvanised steel.

Can I choose this beam based only on its dimensions?

No. A suitably qualified structural engineer should confirm the section, grade, loading capacity, span, connections, bearing details and installation requirements.

Safety Notice

This is a heavy structural steel product and may require suitable mechanical lifting equipment.

Cut ends and edges may be sharp and can retain burrs. Wear suitable gloves, safety footwear, eye protection and other appropriate personal protective equipment.

Ensure the beam is correctly supported and secured during storage, lifting, transportation and installation. Do not weld, grind or heat galvanised steel without suitable ventilation, fume extraction and respiratory protection.
