Material Grade Information
This product is normally supplied in S275JR non-alloy structural steel; selected stock may be supplied in S355JR where applicable.
The grade information shown is general supply information and does not guarantee that a particular grade, certificate or traceability will be supplied for an individual order.
If a particular material grade, certification or traceability is essential, please contact KI Metals before placing your order and obtain written confirmation from KI Metals.
Telephone conversations, verbal discussions, customer order notes, drawing notes and other instructions submitted with an order do not constitute written confirmation of material grade or certification requirements.
Galvanising Process and Cut-End Protection
This item is normally cut to the required length before being sent for hot-dip galvanising.
An approximately 8 mm process hole may be required where necessary so the material can be handled safely and vented or drained during the galvanising process. The position can vary according to the item size, length and galvanising requirements. This is a normal production feature and is not a product defect.
In some cases, material may be galvanised in full lengths and cut afterwards. Where this method is used, exposed cut ends are protected with a suitable zinc-rich cold galvanising spray.
If zinc-rich repair coating is not permitted for your project, or fully hot-dip-galvanised cut ends are required, contact KI Metals before ordering so the production method can be reviewed and confirmed.
Surface Condition
Hot-dip-galvanised coating with normal cosmetic and texture variation.
Normal production, storage, handling and cutting variations are not automatically evidence of a product defect. If appearance is critical, contact KI Metals before ordering.
Typical Applications
- Brackets And Straps
- Outdoor Repairs
- Supports And Frames
- General Fabrication
Design and Suitability
Product selection must not be based on dimensions alone. The required grade, loading, environment, connections, fabrication process and installation method should be specified or checked by a suitably qualified person where applicable.
KI Metals supplies material to the dimensions ordered but does not determine whether a particular item is suitable for the intended load, environment or application.
Cut to Your Required Length
Enter your required measurement in the Length box before adding the product to your basket. Material is cut to the ordered length with a standard cutting tolerance of ±3 mm.
Products are supplied as-cut and are not deburred. Contact KI Metals before ordering if a tighter tolerance, specific end preparation or additional processing is required.
Customise Your Product
Depending on the selected product, size and current service availability, you can use the Optional Extras menu to add drilling requirements, upload a hand sketch or engineering drawing, and choose from the surface-finishing options currently available.
KI Metals also plans to introduce powder coating and red oxide primer as additional customisation options in the future.
Only services displayed and selected through the product customisation menu, or separately confirmed in writing by KI Metals before ordering, form part of the order.
Important: Optional customer drilling is separate from any approximately 8 mm process hole required for handling, venting or drainage during hot-dip galvanising.

Fabrication and Safety
Use tools and procedures suitable for zinc-coated steel. Cutting, drilling, grinding, welding or heating may damage the coating and expose the underlying steel.
Remove zinc from the immediate work area before welding and use suitable extraction, respiratory protection and other controls for zinc-containing fumes and dust. Clean and protect affected areas with a compatible zinc-rich repair coating where continued corrosion resistance is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a particular material grade guaranteed?
Only where KI Metals confirms the required grade in writing before the order is placed. Order notes, drawing notes and verbal discussions are not confirmation.
Can I request a grade or certificate in the order notes?
You may provide information in the order notes, but an order note does not constitute confirmation. Contact KI Metals before ordering and obtain written confirmation.
Can this item be cut to my required length?
Yes. Enter the required measurement in the Length box before adding the product to your basket. The standard cutting tolerance is ±3 mm unless confirmed otherwise.
Are the cut ends deburred?
No. This product is supplied as-cut and is not deburred. Cut ends and edges may be sharp and may contain burrs or loose swarf. Handle with care and use suitable protective equipment.
Why might there be an 8 mm hole?
An approximately 8 mm process hole may be required for safe handling, venting or drainage during hot-dip galvanising. It is a normal production feature, not a defect.
Can I add drilling or a surface finish?
Where available for the selected product and size, use the Optional Extras menu to choose the services currently offered. Powder coating and red oxide primer are planned future options and are not included unless displayed and selected, or confirmed separately in writing by KI Metals before ordering.
Is optional drilling the same as the 8 mm galvanising process hole?
No. Optional drilling is a customer-selected fabrication service. The approximately 8 mm process hole is used where required for handling, venting or drainage during hot-dip galvanising.
Is the material suitable for my project?
The customer is responsible for confirming material grade, dimensions, loading, environment, fabrication method and regulatory requirements. Structural or safety-critical selection should be checked by a suitably qualified person.
Safety Notice
This product is supplied as-cut and is not deburred. Cut edges may be sharp. Wear suitable protective gloves during handling, fabrication and installation.
Cut ends may also contain burrs or loose swarf. Do not run bare hands along cut edges. Use suitable eye protection and other appropriate personal protective equipment, and deburr or otherwise make exposed cut edges safe where required for the intended use.
Galvanised surfaces may include areas of surface roughness or localised zinc build-up. Inspect the item before handling and take additional care around cut ends, process holes and coating irregularities.
Take particular care when cutting, drilling, grinding or heating zinc-coated steel. Use suitable ventilation, extraction and respiratory protection where zinc-containing dust or fumes may be generated.
Welding galvanised steel can produce hazardous zinc oxide fumes. Remove the zinc coating from the immediate weld area using an appropriate method and use suitable ventilation, fume extraction and personal protective equipment.
Ensure the product is correctly supported and secured during unloading, storage, lifting, fabrication, transport and installation.
